Quiet Areas and Phones: Quiet Areas & Phones

Policies concerning noise, cell phone use, and quiet areas

Cell Phones

Be considerate of others. We recommend that you set your cell phone to silent mode rather than ring.

If you must answer or initiate a call, please quickly move to the stairwells or outside the lobby doors.

Do not hold extended phone conversations in the stairwells as the sound travels into the designated quiet areas.

Quiet Areas

Designated Quiet Areas

Noise must be kept to a minimum in the:

  • main reading room
  • main level study carrels (by the North windows), and
  • the downstairs Quiet Study rooms.

General Study Spaces

Haddad Conference Room:
Conversations may be held at moderate level, and group study is acceptable. Please be considerate of others in the adjacent Quiet area.

Group Study Rooms (upstairs):
Conversations may be held at moderate level, and group study is acceptable. Please be considerate of others.

Bishop Quarter Room:
The BQR is designated for individual and group study in a more relaxed atmosphere. Please be considerate of those around you when studying in the BQR space. Occasional conversation in a low tone is acceptable.   If someone asks you to be quiet, and you must continue working in an active group setting, please consider moving to one of the upstairs Group Study Rooms.

Phone Conversations

Do not hold phone conversations in the main library space; move to the outside lobby for extended phone conversations.

If Noise is a Problem
If you are being disturbed in an area designated as a quiet zone, remind that person that the area is intended for quiet study. If this does not resolve the problem, contact a library staff member.
